Vor einigen Jahren ging es noch beschaulich zu. Eine Bildwiederholfrequenz von 60 Hz war quasi in Stein gemeißelt.
100 Hz, 120 Hz, 144 Hz… bis hin zum 240 Hz-Monitor – die Hersteller haben die Bildwiederholfrequenz in den letzten Jahren deutlich nach oben geschraubt.
Dabei sind 240 Hz nicht das Ende der Fahnenstange. Einige Monitore schaffen auch 280 Hz, 300 Hz oder gleich 360 Hz. Diese Monitore haben dann aber max. Full HD-Auflösung, die heutzutage nur noch bedingt zeitgemäß ist.
Gaming-Monitore mit 240 Hz findet man hingegen auch mit WQHD-Auflösung.

Adaptive-Sync ist Quasi-Standard bei einem 240 Hz-Monitor
Was haben die 240 Hz-Monitore gemeinsam?
Mindestens ein Adaptive-Sync-Verfahren ist immer verfügbar.
Für Adaptive-Sync gibt es mehrere Verfahren bzw. Zertifizierungen am Markt:
- VESA Adaptive Sync
- AMD FreeSync, AMD FreeSync Premium oder AMD FreeSync Premium
- Nvidia G-Sync Compatible, Nvidia G-Sync oder Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate
- HDMI VRR
Wozu dienen diese V-Sync-Verfahren? Grafikkarte und Monitor „sprechen miteinander“ und synchronisieren somit die Anlieferung und Darstellung von Bildern.
Falls die Grafikkarte (liefert Einzelbilder bzw. Frames an, gemessen in FPS) und der Monitor (stellt Bilder mit einer Bildwiederholfrequenz wie z.B. eben 240 Hz dar) nicht synchronisiert sind, kann es zum sog. Tearing-Effekt kommen.
Tearing steht für „zerreissen“. Im Grunde wird noch während des Bildaufbaus am Monitor von der Grafikkarte bereits der nächste Frame angeliefert – das Bild reisst dann auf.
Das kann man sich in etwa so vorstellen:

Früher waren die Adaptive-Sync-Verfahren „strikt getrennt“ – vor allem bei Nivida, denn hier durfte nur ein G-Sync-Logo auf den Monitor, wenn ein proprietärer Chip verbaut war.
Den lies sich Nivdia auch bezahlen, weshalb G-Sync-Monitore tendenziell teurer waren.
Mittlerweile hat Nvidia G-Sync ein Stück weit geöffnet und das „G-Sync Compatible“-Programm aufgelegt (siehe Nvidia-Webseite).
Auch VESA entwickelt das Adaptive-Sync-Siegel weiter.
Bei einem HDMI 2.1-Monitor gibt es zudem HDMI-VRR (sofern unterstützt). Ansonsten ist die HDMI-Variante von Adaptive Sync vor allem ein Thema bei Fernsehern und tangiert Konsoleros, die mit einer NextGen-Konsole wie PS5 oder Xbox Series X zocken.
Die Adaptive-Sync-Verfahren ähneln sich also immer mehr bzw. werden zunehmend kompatibel.
Ich kenne derzeit keinen 240 Hz-Monitor, der nicht mindestens ein Adaptive-Sync-Siegel tragen würde. Hier muss man sich also im Detail anschauen, welches Verfahren das richtige ist und zur Grafikkarte passt.
